Member for Williamstown, Melissa Horne attended the 40th birthday of Westona Station.
The name of the station represents both the area and the community.
Locals Joanna O’Connor, Alan Angus and Betty Angus, won the council-run naming contest when the station was first built.
Because the new station was west of Altona, they suggested Westona.
Before the train line was extended and Westona Station was built, the Altona Loop was under threat of closure.
In October 1981 the Liberal Government drastically cut the rail service, with all shuttle services withdrawn, and only two morning and evening trains being operated to and from Melbourne.
However, after the election of the John Cain Jr Government in 1982 those services resumed.
That led to the line being extended to Westona, and then on to Laverton.
Quotes attributable to Member for Williamstown, Melissa Horne
‘It was great to celebrate this milestone with Gary, the Station Master at Werribee. With the West Gate Tunnel Project being completed at the end of this year, there will be additional capacity on the Werribee and Williamstown lines – meaning there can be more train services for our community.’
Ends.
