Celebrations to mark the 30th birthday of the South Kingsville Community Centre were held
on Friday the 4th of October, with a special community event. Member for Williamstown,
Melissa Horne was in attendance to help celebrate. The community focused celebration was
made possible thanks to a $15,000 grant from the West Gate Neighbourhood Fund. The
celebration reflected the centre’s values and goals by having something for everyone with
workshops, a petting zoo, a disco, cupcake decorating, arts and craft activities, and birthday
cake.
The South Kingsville Community Centre was found the 1993, by a group of passionate
community leaders and with support of local council and organisations. Today the same
passion is still alive and well in the community with the centre being managed by a
dedicated board of volunteers and service providers at the centre. From maternal and child
health to occasional childcare, kindergarten, playgroup, senior citizens activities, social and
recreational programs, and information and referral services, South Kingsville Community
Centre provides a comprehensive suite of services for individuals from birth to maturity.
The $10 million West Gate Neighbourhood Fund was established to support communities in
Melbourne’s inner west during the construction of the West Gate Tunnel. The West Gate
Neighbourhood Fund has supported over 200 community projects at a value of more than
$9.5 million.
The celebration of 30 years of the South Kingsville Community Centre was focused on the
community and highlighted that the community and service will be central to the next 30
years of success.
Quote attributable to Member for Williamstown, Melissa Horne MP
“The South Kingsville Community Centre is more than a gathering place, it’s a hub of
information, of service and of community. The Centre has grown so much over the past 30
years, and I wish the Centre, all the staff and volunteers the very best for the next 30 years”.
