The Allan Labor Government is cutting air pollution in Altona North and boosting parking options for locals as it continues to seal roads in Melbourne’s west. Minister for Roads and Road Safety Melissa Horne today announced the completion of works to seal Ross Road in Altona North between Mills Street and Blenheim Road delivering improved access, new parking, and safer pedestrian connections for the local community and sporting clubs.
Local families who regularly use the Paisley Park soccer complex will benefit from an additional 146 on-road parking bays, as will visitors to the nearby Australian Islamic Centre and the popular Altona Miniature Railway.
The project has also delivered a 2.5-metre-wide footpath from Mills Street to the Soccer Club gate and 800 metres of new safety fencing along the busy railway line. Works on a new shared path linking Blenheim Road and Mills Street are expected to be completed this week.
The works are part of a $5 million package to seal roads in Melbourne’s west and reduce dust pollution announced in the Victorian Budget 2023/24.
Thanks to this investment, works to seal the southern end of Old Geelong Road in Brooklyn are already complete, creating a cleaner, smoother and safer journey for key freight vehicles accessing industry.
Once the West Gate Tunnel opens later this year, six 24-hour No-Truck Zones will be introduced on key roads across the inner west, including Francis Street and Somerville Road in Yarraville, Buckley Street and Moore Street in Footscray, Blackshaws Road in Altona North and Hudsons Road in Spotswood.
These No-Truck Zones will remove 9,000 trucks every day from residential streets and redirect them through the new West Gate Tunnel – improving safety, air quality and reducing noise for local communities.
