JOINT STATEMENT FROM TIM WATTS AND MELISSA HORNE
Our community in Melbourne’s West is one of the most diverse in Australia and we’re proud of it. The way people from every imaginable background come together to build a thriving, shared community, is one of the most special things about where we live.
So we were disturbed to hear reports that a Molotov cocktail was thrown at the truck of a local resident immediately after someone was heard shouting Islamophobic abuse.
Police are investigating this outrageous attack. Those responsible should face the full force of the law.
Incidents like this aren’t just an attack on physical property, they are an attack on the Australian way of life.
They are an attack on everyone’s right to live their lives, express their views, and practice their faith free from fear.
We are grateful that the victim of this incident feels supported by his local community and we encourage everyone in Melbourne’s West to show their solidarity and condemn racism and Islamophobia.
Anyone with information about this incident should contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or crimestoppers.com.au
Acts of hate and violence against any race, gender or religion have no place in our community.
