Urgent works to stabilise the Altona seawall will commence next week to ensure the safety of locals and visitors in the lead up to summer.
Scheduled to begin on Monday 17 November, this project demonstrates the Victorian Government’s commitment to protecting the state’s beautiful coastlines and associated communities.
Works are expected to last for two weeks with the immediate foreshore, adjacent car parking, and Bay Trail closed to the public during this time.
Stabilisation of the seawall is not only important for the safety of families, but for the continued protection of key public assets such as the Bay Trail, Esplanade roadway and a collection of foreshore reserves.
The coastal erosion experienced in the Altona seawall area is influenced by various factors such as sediment buildup and tidal fluctuations in relation to the nearby Laverton Creek spit.
These works are being delivered by the Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action (DEECA) in response to a technical investigation of the site undertaken earlier this year.
After the Altona seawall is stabilised, DEECA will continue to work with Hobsons City Bay Council to repair the seawall and protect the area from further coastal erosion.
